PHASE 5: Infield Surface Reconstruction – 2025

The Deltaville Ballpark has always been known as having an exceptional “skin” infield, both in terms of playing quality and unmatched drainage. However, over the course of seven decades, no formal grading had ever been performed – the field followed the natural contours of the land. Combined with decades of use, dust buildup, and dragging, the field’s slope was such that home plate was at the approximate elevation of the shortstop’s knees!

After several years of consulting with numerous companies, a plan was devised on how to grade the ballpark’s infield properly. This entailed tearing down the infield and rebuilding it from (almost) scratch.

After removing over 100 tons of dirt, a computer-controlled, laser-guided tractor spread over 120 tons of specialty field mix dirt on the infield. Home plate and the surrounding area was dropped several inches while the rest of the infield was slightly raised, reducing the amount of slope while still maintaining plenty of slope for drainage. The hundreds of stone-filled holes drilled into the infield in the 1990’s remain, collecting water from the surface to ensure Deltaville Ballpark remains playable, if possible, despite whatever Mother Nature throws our way.
